Accelerating the Development of Oral Biodevices by Advancing Technologies

Timely and forward-thinking initiative!

The forward-thinking initiative is very timely– it will position NIDCR among the other NIH Institutes driving the digital health/precision medicine initiative. The oral cavity is a very attractive, but neglected, site for collecting actionable biometrics. The oral biodevices initiative would certainly catalyze the transformative transdisciplinary collaborations necessary to accelerate oral biodevice research and augment... more »

Encouraging collaboration will be key

This is an exciting opportunity to move the field forward and develop cutting-edge technologies to help improve oral and overall health. In order to accomplish the goals of this initiative it will be key to engage different research communities, including engineers, biologists, and clinicians. Moving forward, approaches that encourage research collaboration across these different fields will be key.

The dawn of era of translational dentistry The oralbiodevices

The era of oral bio devices will revolutionize the delivery of oral health . In my views the research and development of oralbiodevices should focus on :
1. Use of nanoparticles in oral bio devices to enable the release of therapeutic agents in oral cavity for sustained period of time
2. The therapeutic agents should focus on use of fluorides and chlorhexidine and doxycycline etc which can restore and improve teeth... more »

Aligning with the All of Us Research program

It could be beneficial to the scientific community if NIDCR worked with the All of Us Research program (formally called the precision medicine initiative) to spur innovations that 1) advance oral health research and 2) can be integrated into the All of Us Research program. It is important that oral health is not overlooked within this new program that is likely to have a large impact on how the community views precision... more »

Oral devices with batteries; Intra-oral electronics

The first step to accelerate new devices and orally-based treatments for many conditions is to design wearable, low-cost, and easy-to-use platforms for intra-oral electronics. I envision the platforms to be removable devices or systems that contain a power supply; which today means batteries. Designs of such platforms for apnea monitoring and speech -in-noise (or underwater voice transmission) has previously been funded... more »

Mentoring Network for Underrepresented Postdoctoral and Early-Career Faculty Investigators

Mentoring Early-Career Faculty Investigators

Dear NIDCR,
Thank you so much for your Initiative. Idea of mentoring Network for Underrepresented Postdoctoral and Early-Career Faculty Investigators is very novel and innovative idea. I believe if Early-Career Faculty Investigators from Underrepresented area must be given opportunity for learning in conventional and new areas of oral and dental care to serve the people the that region without compromising the quality... more »

Interdisciplinary Approaches to Promote Adolescents' Oral Health and Reduce Disparities

Worthy initiative; broad view encouraged

I commend the NIDCR for maintaining its long-standing commitment to reducing and eliminating oral health disparities and fully support focused initiatives in the arena of adolescent oral health. From tobacco, to nutrition, to physical activity, self-care, substance misuse, and mental health, this lifestage is a critical developmental and behavioral period with ample opportunities for formative research and innovative... more »

SalivaPRINT Toolkit by SalivaTec Lab

The value of the molecular information obtained from saliva is dependent on the use of in vitro and in silico techniques. The main proteins of saliva when separated by capillary electrophoresis enable the establishment of individual profiles with characteristic patterns reflecting each individual phenotype. Different physiological or pathological conditions may be identified by specific protein profiles. The association... more »

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth were necessary for people who lived in ancient times. Because they need to had wide mandibula and maxilla so they could chew the raw meat. But today's people don't need them because of the evolution. Most of us don't even have all of the wisdom teeth or if we have them we need to have them out. So we can vaccinate people before they are 7 years old (before odontogenesis).

Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction has always been in the same way. As we can see in the Dentistry's history dentists have been using the same tools for tooth extractions. Nowadays technology can't accept this. We should invent biodevices or injection which can provide tooth extraction easily. This can be done with a gingival treatment which can save us from using the primitive techniques. We can do an implementation to the gingiva and... more »

Excellent move in research funding that will stimula innovation

Dentistry has been one of the most innovative professions in patient care, recently we have embraced digital imaging, digital design, and digital manufacturing as something that will soon be part of our everyday practice in tooth restorations. These types of technologies are the mainstay of engineering where there have been great strides in 3d printing of devices, electrical, nano sensors, and the development of an array... more »

Biosensors

Here are my thoughts on the process of developing oral biosensor research. If there was time I would encourage #7. It could be done by phone or skype, but ideally face to face.

1, Is the biosensor to be used to detect/monitor oral analytes and/or conditions, or alternatively for monitoring systemic c conditions/diseases.
2.Will the biosensor be removable, analogous to an orthodontic appliance, or semi-permanent for... more »
